Resume studies: an achievable dream

Resume studies: an achievable dream
Resuming studies after some time is a fantastic idea. Let's not let insecurities defeat us; if we take the step, we won't regret it.

The question we ask ourselves

Childhood led us to school: to see if we were capable of sitting still doing something we didn't want to do for too many hours in a row. Adolescence showed us the high school where we fought between teenage rebellion, the desire to spend the day with our gang, what our parents demanded of us, and hormones. Then, in youth, we had to go to college or start working as soon as possible. For some people, it was both. This is the path that society has established, and sometimes one doesn't know if they like it because they do or because it has been forcefully ingrained in their brain. Other times, one doesn't know if they hate it because they do or because it has been forcefully ingrained in their brain. But the years go by, and new opportunities can arise or there are dreams that were there and never left, or dreams that appear one day and haunt you wherever you go. And they can be ignored, but they bother and leave a taste of failure, of what could have been and wasn't, which is bitter at times. And to seize opportunities, fulfill dreams, or not be bitter at times, one day comes the moment when we seriously ask ourselves: what if I do it? What if I finally decide to resume my studies?

Resuming studies and living is possible

If, having the energy of being 20, living with our parents, and having nothing else to do, it was a tremendous effort to start studying, how are we going to do it when we have already lost the habit of studying, work full-time, or have to take care of our family and attend to our home? Well, it's very surprising, but once we get into the routine, we discover that resuming studies is not so complicated. If some years have passed and we have worked or even retired already, we will see that it takes much less effort than we imagined. Why? Well, it may be because we already have experience studying, because, in reality, studying until obtaining a university eTitle is not as difficult as we thought, because we have already gotten used to life and handle frustration with more elegance, because we have clearer objectives and fewer distractions, because our life and professional experience are now much greater... Whatever the reason, we will soon discover that incorporating study into our daily routines is easier than it seemed at first, and the enjoyment we will obtain from it compensates for the extra effort. If we want to, there is time for everything.

Relearning how to study

One of the challenges that adults may face is having forgotten how to study, and while young people have all their techniques (and their brains) fresh, not-so-young people may feel their memory capacity slightly diminished and a slight lack of resources when it comes to hitting the books. It all depends on how it is approached: there will be no drama if they realize that the lack of habit is not a problem and having less memory is not either. What would be a problem is insisting on expecting the same performance at 65 as at 19. With effective study techniques (like the ones we talk about on our blog), combined with the experience and common sense that come with years of life, resuming studies will be a total success. What was read and memorized by young people like parrots can now be learned much better by creating your own tests, studying with drawings, flashcards, or other more useful and entertaining study techniques. In reality, that feeling of diminished abilities is more the fear of failure than an actual capacity problem, and after facing the first exams, they will see that they are much better at it than they thought and even get better grades than before.

Experience is more than a degree

In addition, as adults, we will appreciate much more clearly the advantages that having extra training in any subject will give us and the fact that this training will be an added value to our resume. Resuming studies will allow us to aspire to a better profession or to advance in the one we already practice. On the other hand, those who want to study for pure pleasure or to fulfill a long-standing desire will see that learning new things, attending classes or conferences, reading the thoughts of great authors, or delving into topics of interest becomes something exciting from which, as adults, much more substance is extracted and much more enjoyable is experienced than in youth. Let's leave insecurities behind; starting to study as an adult is more rewarding and is better taken advantage of. If it's something we want to do, it's better not to wait any longer and take the step.
